Article: From Careers Fair to Design Engineer: Regan's Journey with DB ESG
When Regan attended a university placement fair, she didn’t expect to leave with a clear path for her future—but a conversation with the DB ESG team changed that.
Regan Stacey joined DB ESG in July 2024 on a year’s placement, having completed her second year of an Electrical and Electronic Engineering Degree at the University of Derby. She is returning to university in the autumn of 2025 for her final year of study.
Why Did You Choose a Placement with DB ESG?
“I talked to someone from DB ESG at a placement fair and was told about the new technologies the company is exploring. I found it really interesting," Regan explains. "The work being done in the Digital Engineering team with 3D scanning and additive manufacturing particularly caught my attention. It sounded exciting to work for a company so invested in innovation."
That initial curiosity led to deeper research. Regan discovered a company that combined the flexibility and friendliness of a small business with the opportunities and backing of a much larger international group.
"With fewer than 100 people in the Derby office, it’s a close-knit, supportive environment—but you also benefit from the scale and professionalism of a global rail business."
“In my interviews with DB ESG, it was also clear that my placement would be very hands-on, involving working with just about everyone in the company. This aspect was particularly appealing to me, as it offered the chance to sink my teeth into meaningful work, without the risk of being lost or overlooked in a large organisation.”
What Does a Placement at DB ESG Involve?
Regan joined DB ESG as an Undergraduate Design Engineer, supporting a range of projects, producing and modifying drawings and associated designs, creating electrical schematics, harness and wiring diagrams. Even though Regan is studying Electrical and Electronic Engineering at university, she has also gained experience working on mechanical drawings and models for projects.
“One of the most exciting parts of my placement has been supporting the roll-out of a new software system for our design team to help improve the efficiency and delivery of DB ESG’s electrical design elements for the larger turnkey projects. I have built a database of standard/ preferred parts.”
This very hands-on experience has helped Regan to build practical skills, not typically covered in the classroom. She has also helped to inspire the future generation of engineers, getting involved in the Primary Engineer Rail Programme. This project takes railway engineering into school classrooms, giving children the tools and knowledge to design, build and test their own vehicles. “Not only was this project enjoyable, especially seeing how enthusiastic the children were, but it considerably developed my communications skills.”
What Makes DB ESG Stand Out?
“The people,” Regan says without hesitation. “Everyone at DB ESG is so approachable and willing to help, the atmosphere is very welcoming. Even though I’m still a student, I’ve always been treated as an equal. There’s a great balance between support and independence. I have been trusted to complete tasks on my own, whilst understanding that there is help if I need it and that nobody will be upset if I make a mistake because this is part of the learning process.”
As part of the placement, Regan had the opportunity to rotate through different teams to better understand how the company operates and how different roles contribute to both project delivery and the success of the organisation as a whole.
What have been your favourite moments during this placement?
From conducting vehicle surveys at depots, to seeing a customer project from start through to finish, Regan points to experiences that have bridged the gap between classroom theory and real-world application.
“These moments helped me understand how our designs are applied to actual vehicles and how important it is to consider every detail, including the variations that often exist between individual vehicles in a train fleet.”
Have you found your experience to be valuable for your future?
“I have found my placement with DB ESG extremely valuable. In the time I have been here I have been able to develop my skills. I have been given regular feedback on the quality of my work; with other designers giving me advice and tips on how to improve.”
With this nurturing, Regan believes that she has thrived, growing her confidence and skills.
“Prior to my placement I hadn’t had much workplace experience due to COVID and it has been great to get that experience and also gain lots of important knowledge of the rail industry and how things are done.”
Any advice for Future Placement Students?
“You don’t need to have your whole career mapped out—just be open to trying new things,” Regan advises. “A placement helps you figure out what you enjoy, and maybe even what you don’t. I’ve had the chance to shape my time at DB ESG to match my goals and interests. The team genuinely cares about making your experience worthwhile.”
She believes that a year in industry can really help you work out what you want to do in the future.
So, What’s Next?
"Before my placement, I wasn’t sure exactly what I wanted to do after university. But now I know—I want to pursue a career in Design Engineering, and ideally, I’d love to come back to DB ESG."
