Multiple formation sanding modification for ScotRail’s Class 334 fleet

ScotRail’s Class 334 electric multiple unit

Overview

DB ESG was contracted by the train operator ScotRail to propose and then develop a design modification for their Class 334 units to enable additional sanding functionality in multiple unit formation. ScotRail required sanding functionality across all coupled units, specifically in the leading vehicle of both the driving and trailing unit, rather than limiting it to the front active cab as was previously the case.

DB ESG developed a solution that solved the requirement for an active cab in the trailing unit, enabling sanding to be applied in both units. This modification has been successfully trialled and will now be rolled out across the fleet, enhancing operational safety and performance.

Work Undertaken by DB ESG

  • Conducted a site survey to evaluate existing sander arrangements on Cl334 units.
  • Produced a design solution report, defining circuit changes and providing a Bill of Materials.
  • Developed the concept design for the modification.
  • Supplied comprehensive modification instructions.
  • Updated electrical schematics and wiring diagrams.
  • Delivered a post modification wiring test specification and a minor modification attestation statement.
  • Supported first-in-class fitment and trialling to validate the solution.
