Article: Installation of Passenger Information System (PIS) on Class 333 Fleet
Overview
Northern Trains appointed DB ESG to deliver a turnkey materials supply and installation programme to upgrade the Passenger Information System (PIS) across its fleet of 16 Class 333 electric multiple units.
DB ESG provided end-to-end project management, procurement, logistics and engineering support, with the majority of installation activities undertaken at Northern’s Skipton Sidings facility and managed on site by DB ESG’s Project Services Team, supported by DB ESG engineers, project managers and designers.
Northern provided the first-in-class equipment kit, with DB ESG procuring and supplying a further 15 ready to install kits for the remaining units.
During installation preparation, DB ESG identified a number of drawing updates and additional new designs required to ensure safe, compliant installation of the upgraded PIS. Completion of this engineering work extended the overall programme duration, but ensured full alignment with compliance and safety standards.
Work Undertaken by DB ESG
- Site Preparation and Installation Methodology
- Conducted a comprehensive site survey of Skipton Sidings to establish safe systems of work, material flows, tooling requirements and storage arrangements.
- Produced a detailed method statement to enable safe and efficient installation activities.
- Design and Engineering
- Validated Northern’s existing design packages and identified areas requiring revision.
- Updated drawings and produced new design models and documentation to support compliant installation of the PIS equipment.
- Leveraged DB ESG’s Digital Engineering capability, utilising 3D scanning and 3D printing to develop bespoke installation components, such as PIS mounting brackets.
- Material Supply and Pre-Assembly
- Procured materials required for the programme, supplying complete installation kits for each unit.
- Delivered kits lineside, on a just in time basis to minimise on-site storage and optimise workflow.
- Pre-assembled and tested harnesses and panels to streamline installation and reduce vehicle downtime.
- Installation
- Installation was delivered by a competent artisan team selected and managed on-site by DB ESG.
- Testing and commissioning
- Completed testing and commissioning of newly installed equipment to ensure functional integration with Class 333 systems.
Outcome
The upgrades have equipped the Class 333 fleet with a modern and reliable passenger information system. DB ESG’s combined strengths in engineering, design, digital and project services expertise ensured a safe and high quality installation programme. The flexible project management approach allowed the team to respond effectively to evolving design requirements.
